The advance/decline line counts how many S&P 500 members closed higher against how many closed lower, then accumulates that difference over time. It answers a question the index price cannot: whether a move was carried by the whole market or by a handful of large constituents.
The S&P 500 is capitalisation weighted, so the largest members dominate the number quoted on screen. An index can print a new high while the majority of its members decline, because the weight sits in the few that rose. The A/D line is unweighted - every member counts once - which is what makes the divergence visible.
Intraday $ADD updates as the session runs, so participation can be watched while it develops rather than reconstructed after the close. Breadth that expands with price says the move has support across the index. Price extending while breadth flattens or reverses says the opposite: fewer names are carrying it.
Narrow breadth concentrates hedging pressure into the same handful of names that dominate index gamma. When participation thins, dealer hedging flow in the largest constituents has more influence over the index level, which is why breadth and gamma exposure are usually read together rather than separately.
The widely quoted NYSE A/D line covers every issue on that exchange, including closed-end funds, preferred shares and interest-rate sensitive listings that are not operating companies. The S&P 500 version tracked here is restricted to index members, so it measures participation inside the index being traded rather than across a mixed universe.
